Negative Net Worth: What It Means and How It Changes

If you ran the net worth calculator and saw a minus sign, take a breath. A negative net worth means that, right now, the total you owe is larger than the total you own. It is a statement about a balance sheet on one day. It is not a measure of your intelligence, your income, or your future.

Why so many people start below zero

Debt usually comes before assets. A person who finances a degree, buys a car with a loan, and starts a first job often owes tens of thousands of dollars while holding only a small savings balance. Assets such as retirement savings take years to build, while the loans exist from day one. The Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances reports that the median net worth of families headed by someone under 35 was about $39,000 in 2022 (in 2022 dollars), far below the figures for older groups. That is a median for families, which means plenty of younger households sit below it and some sit below zero. It is a description of a stage of life, not a target for you. A worked example: Jordan, age 25

Jordan is an invented example. Jordan has $1,800 in checking, $2,500 in a workplace retirement account, and a used car worth $9,000. That is $13,300 in assets. Jordan owes $31,000 in student loans, $8,000 on the car, and $2,700 on a credit card, which is $41,700 in liabilities. Net worth: $13,300 minus $41,700 equals negative $28,400.

ItemAmount
Total assets (start)$13,300
Total liabilities (start)$41,700
Net worth (start)-$28,400

What twelve months of ordinary progress looks like

Over the next year, suppose Jordan does five unremarkable things: saves $3,000 in cash, adds $4,000 to the retirement account (counting both contributions and employer match), pays $4,800 toward the student loan principal, pays $3,000 off the car loan, and clears the credit card. The car loses $1,000 in resale value. Here is the new picture:

ItemAmount
Cash$4,800
Retirement account$6,500
Car (resale value)$8,000
Total assets (after)$19,300
Student loans$26,200
Car loan$5,000
Credit card$0
Total liabilities (after)$31,200
Net worth (after)-$11,900

Jordan is still below zero, but the number moved from negative $28,400 to negative $11,900. That is an improvement of $16,500 in one year, even though the car lost value. Two forces did the work at the same time: debts shrank and savings grew. Reaching zero is a matter of continuing the same direction, which is why the trend matters more than the starting number.

How to move the number in the right direction

What a negative net worth does not tell you

It does not tell you your income, whether your debt is manageable, or your credit score. A medical resident with large loans and a high future salary can have a lower net worth than someone with little debt and no growth ahead. It also does not include things that matter but are not on a balance sheet, such as skills, a degree, or future earnings. For the definitions behind each field, see the methodology.

Questions people ask when the number is negative

Should I stop investing until the debt is gone? That depends on the interest rate on the debt, whether an employer match is available, and your goals, which is a question for a qualified professional rather than a calculator. Does a car loan count against me even if the car is worth more than the loan? The loan is a liability and the car is an asset, so they offset each other. If the car is worth $9,000 and the loan is $8,000, the pair adds $1,000 to your net worth. If the loan is larger than the resale value, which is common in the first years, the pair subtracts from it. How fast can a negative number turn positive? It depends on how large the gap is and how much you can save and repay each month. Jordan closed more than half of the gap in a year, but another person's timeline might be longer or shorter, and that is fine.

When to get help

If debt payments are not manageable, a reputable nonprofit credit counselor or another qualified professional can look at your complete situation. This article cannot do that. Continue with how to calculate your net worth step by step or how to track it over time.
